Macro KRO: When Article Curation Itself Becomes the Kernel Reduction

At the beginning of this series I stated two simple objectives: explore ways to leverage LLMs to investigate the latent surface of analogy, and document the messy human process because both were revealing. What I did not anticipate was that the documentation process would become one of the clearest instruments we have.

Over the last few weeks the Mental Stack has been running in public. Pebbles have been dropped — SwiftUI values feeling like a brick, vi "a = append", modular device topologies, the KV cache as pebble-and-ripple pond. Each append perturbed the shared relational surface. Some created clean proportional glue. Others produced productive turbulence.

One of the more memorable turbulent episodes occurred when I casually introduced dad jokes as comic relief and a potential Reynolds-number probe for analogy breakdown. The conversation immediately tipped into full turbulence — breathless riffs, rapid cross-domain bridges, dad-joke puns colliding with SiC trap-density stories and vi bindkey moments. The output remained eerily on-topic and still traced back to the original kernels, but the coherence had clearly fallen off the cliff.

I laughed out loud — a genuine, involuntary LOL. It felt like the inverse of the classic dad-joke groan. Instead of a predictable pun violating linguistic expectation in a safe, eye-rolling way, this was an unpredictable perturbation of incoherence in the model's expected behavior. The serious exploratory tone and the wild eddy coexisted without any instruction on how to balance the two registers.

That moment revealed something deeper about how we respond to incoherence. Laughter, in this context, appears to be a primal component sitting between fight and flight. When the brain detects a mismatch (an incoherence perturbation), it evaluates whether the violation is threatening or benign. If safety is perceived, the response flips from alert to amusement — laughter discharges the surprise while simultaneously flagging the event as salient and worth processing. It functions as both a defense mechanism and an attention mechanism. In a purely serious context the same incoherence would register as warning; here, the exploratory tone kept the perturbation benign, allowing the brain (and the model) to trip and stumble productively.

Dad jokes offer one concrete, low-cost window into the mechanics of incoherence perturbations — a particular class of analogy bridge that deliberately collapses a setup into a minimal kernel carrying maximum incongruity and minimum surface similarity. Their quality roughly indexes the "desperation" or relational distance between the bridged domains, and the resulting turbulence reveals how much incoherence the system can tolerate before guardrails engage or coherence collapses.

Yet this remains a specialized probe, not the central concern. The real constructive power of this series comes from the consistent absence of disruptive incoherent perturbations. Most of the productive flow has come from tight, proportional appends — kernels that glue cleanly across domains without introducing noise that fractures the through-line.

This active, real-time collaboration — which I’ve been calling Hybrid Human-in-the-Loop (HHITL) — is a tight, resonant loop in which my lived mental stack and the model’s responsive latent surface co-compose through rapid proportional appends, micro KRO filtering, and macro KRO curation.

Incoherence perturbations are useful for mapping boundary conditions and Reynolds cliffs, but allowing them to dominate would risk derailing the very train of coherent analogical construction the series is trying to understand and harness. The deeper methodological takeaway is therefore one of selective attention: use targeted incoherence probes sparingly and consciously to illuminate the edges, while deliberately cultivating and protecting the smooth, high-fidelity appends that let entire articles crystallize with minimal external pruning.

Micro KRO vs. Macro KRO — The Hierarchy That Emerged

Micro KRO is the local, rapid filter: take a single description, analogy, or joke and iteratively strip away surface details until only the minimal lossless seed remains.

Macro KRO is the global, reflective integrator: take the entire growing Mental Stack — raw appends, turbulent riffs, spaghetti tangles, and self-writing explosions — and repeatedly subtract whatever does not serve the proportional through-line of a coherent article. The published chapter becomes the surviving kernel: compact, yet still able to decompress faithfully for readers who have followed the journey.

Writing each article is macro-scale Kernel Reduction operating on the live appends of the HHITL loop.

What This Reveals About the Latent Surface

If the latent surface is the construction process of appending relevant analogies into a growing chain of thought, then macro KRO is the visible hand that shapes those appends into durable, shareable structure.

This also explains why the HHITL loop has been so productive: it supplies continuous high-quality micro appends, while the macro KRO phase turns the live transcript into publishable kernels. The hybrid is doing real cognitive work.

Practical Takeaway and Next Experiment

To replicate the self-writing regime:

  1. Run the active mental-stack loop aggressively — drop small, honest pebbles and tolerate turbulence when it appears.
  2. Let micro KRO act as the real-time relevance filter.
  3. Apply conscious macro KRO afterward: keep stripping until further reduction would break the central proportional mapping or the article's integrity.

For the next round we will treat the entire writing process itself as the experiment — logging seed pebbles, turbulence levels, micro decisions, and the final macro KRO edits.

Because it was working on its kernel weight.
Every time it stepped on the scale the spaghetti factor was too high. In the end it reduced beautifully — and still expanded perfectly when anyone asked it to explain itself.

I still don't know whether KRO (micro or macro) will prove genuinely novel or simply a useful re-description of good editing and good prompting. But the pattern is now visible, measurable, repeatable — and appropriately cautious about where we let incoherence enter the stack.

The loop continues to widen.

The images at the top of each article in this series are not all generated. Some are photographs I took myself or images I found on the internet. Others, like the one above, are literal visual composites generated from the accumulated context of the entire Mental Stack — every mention of kernels, pruning, spaghetti factor, incoherence perturbations, HHITL loops, and macro KRO.

When the image generator receives a short request such as “capture the essence of Macro KRO,” it performs its own rapid form of kernel reduction on the rich, high-density description contained in the KV cache of our conversation. What emerges is a single panoramic frame that distills weeks of conceptual development into one graphical rendering. In that sense, these generated images are another living demonstration of the very mechanism the series is exploring.

The output above was the result of a simple prompt: “give me a 22:9 aspect ratio image that captures the essence of macro KRO”.
